Art for the Majlis: Styling the Most Important Room in the House
In many Emirati and Arab homes, the majlis is the room that speaks for the family. It is where guests are welcomed, where conversations run late, and where first impressions are made. The art on its walls should carry that weight.
Think in symmetry
Majlis seating usually runs along the walls, so the room has several important walls rather than one. Symmetry keeps a long room calm and composed. Two approaches work well:
- One statement piece centred on the wall opposite the entrance, so it is the first thing guests see.
- A matching pair either side of a central feature, such as a doorway, a window or a display niche.
Go generous with scale
Majlis walls are long and the seating is low, so small art gets lost fast. Use these as a starting point:
- Width: aim for artwork around two thirds the length of the seating run below it.
- Height: leave 20 to 30 cm between the top of the seat back and the bottom of the frame.
- Long runs: use two or three pieces in a row with tight, even gaps of 5 to 8 cm, so they read as one composition.
If a wall sits between standard sizes, any of our artworks can be made in a custom size to fit it exactly.
Choose subjects that feel rooted
- Calligraphy. The most natural fit for a majlis. Contemporary calligraphy brings movement and meaning to a wall. Choose pieces whose forms or words feel right for your family. See the Calligraphy collection.
- Middle Eastern scenes. Desert landscapes, heritage architecture and horses connect the room to place and history. See the Middle Eastern collection and the Horse Art collection.
- Masters Reimagined. Familiar painting styles turned toward the region. A guaranteed conversation starter. See Masters Reimagined.
The majlis is the room guests remember. Let the walls say something worth remembering.
Mind the evening light
Most majlis rooms come alive in the evening under warm lighting. Warm palettes such as gold, sand, ochre and deep red glow under that light, while cool greys can look flat. A matte canvas surface helps too, because it won't throw glare from ceiling lights back at seated guests.
Balance the art with the room
If your majlis already has rich textiles, carved wood or ornate furniture, choose calmer art so the room doesn't compete with itself. If the room is minimal, the art can lead. Either way, resist filling every wall. One or two statement walls, with the rest kept quiet, looks more considered than art everywhere.
